Holy shee-at, that was fun! When the Commodore Ballroom is a thumpin, don’t come knockin!!
I really don’t even know where to begin. I mean I walked into the Commodore Ballroom shortly after 9p.m. and kind of felt like A Tribe Called Red had made a mistake adding a second show, it was fairly empty- but that wouldn’t last long.
The show started at 9 with DJ Self Evident and despite a small crowd he managed to get things started off well with some slick styles and smooth beats. Was there anything really jaw-dropping? Hard to say with such a small crowd at the beginning of his set. I can say that by the end of his set he had people on the dance floor grooving out to what he spun.
Before Lido Pimienta could come take the stage there was a small break with discussions from various activists pretty much saying ‘Fuck the oil sands, fuck Kinder Morgan and Fuck Stephen Harper’. Hmm, many people bought into it right away but as the talking went on, and on… and on, the crowd grew a bit restless. Sure, they want to support causes and grassroots activities and all, but bring on the music!
… and BOOM! Welcome to the stage little old Colombian, Lido Pimienta!
The craziness to ensue was that this little Colombian songbird broke out, danced her ass off and surely got the crowd in a bit of a tizzy (if you consider tizzy a good thing and not a nervous anxiety).
The most awkward moment had to come near the end when she asked for the lovely ladies in the house to join her on stage. Talk about a security team nightmare. Ha ha, it was all for fun and just to keep the party going but Lido broke into a tangent that included stating she loved all the white people but they needed to use their pretty skin colour for good!
It was time for what we had all been waiting for…
Are you ready Vancouver for… A TRIBE CALLED RED!!!
The crowd was fully engaged from the beginning of their set until the end. People pushed their way to the front while dancing, grinding, chanting, singing, roaring, being, living, laughing and just all out enjoying as First Nation DJ’s performed their first night of two sold out Commodore Ballroom shows.
The Commodore was smart not to give out beer bottles, I mean there was a certain amount of rowdiness that one has to come to expect at a show like this, but it was tame for the most part with high fiving among fans.
If you haven’t yet heard these guys (and gal)— then go check them out when they come to a city near you. They kicked it- hard!
Oh, big shout out to all the fans!

This post is a response to @JayMoller1 who saw my show on Sunday 16,14 at The Garrison.
Because twitter has a specific letter count restriction, it is obvious a simple tweet/reply to him cannot and will not suffice.
